I didn’t lift, I didn’t squat, I didn’t press, I didn’t pull. It was all conditioning. The guys that are at 145 are super fast and I didn’t think that the speed difference would actually be an issue, but it was.

How often do you engage in resistance training? What is a typical workout?
Quite often, I do a big strength pull, pre-camp, maybe like six to eight weeks of heavy lifting: big
squats, big bench presses, big rack pulls, big pullups, all obviously to build up the strength and get big and strong and ready for camp.

After going to 145 and back to 155, what changes did you notice?
I am a lot healthier, I have got a lot more energy, and I’m sleeping better. When I competed at 145, it was just too hard to live the lifestyle of a fighter and maintain my weight so low, for me. I was acting like a bodybuilder, but living like a fighter. The mix didn’t work for me, especially when I saw I lost the love, and the fun, for fighting because of what I was putting my body through.

How have you gotten back into your old mindset and having fun with it?
A lot of it was actually going away when I was [coaching] on The Ultimate Fighter and helping out the other guys and seeing how much I have developed. That got my mind free and back into gear.

Below, Pearson demonstrates a couple of muscle-building, fat-burning moves endorsed by strength and conditioning trainer Josh Bryant, CSCS , writer of Metroflex Gym Powerbuilding Basics.

DEAD SQUAT
[To do this move, beginning the exercise at the bottom of a squat. Place a barbell inside a power shelve and descend the inside encouragement bars down far sufficient so that when you obtain underneath the barbell and place it opposite your shoulders, you look as if you're in the bottom location of a normal barbell squat.] Rest the barbell on your shoulders and squeeze the bar with an overhand hold somewhat wider than shoulder-width apart. With your feet shoulderwidth detached and back straight, assertively mount up until your legs are straight, knees unlocked. Squat back down to place the weight back down on the inside encouragement bars. Repeat.
Start with: 6 sets of 1 repute any at 65% of your max power; rest for 30 seconds between sets

STANDING WEIGHTED CRUNCH
Clip a cord hoop to a high line pulley, squeeze an finish in any hand, then mount with your back to it, knees somewhat collapsed and feet shoulder-width apart. Place your fists down by your chest”elbows indicating down”so that the center of the cord touches the back of your neck. Keeping your fists positioned by your chest, twist deliver at the waist until your elbows touch your thighs. Pause, lapse to the beginning position, and repeat.

Start with: 3 sets of 10 reps each, rest 1-2 mins between sets

LANDMINE (shown above)
Place a finish of an Olympic barbell in the dilemma of the room at an angle. Stand in front of the opposite finish and squeeze it with both hands, a palm on tip of the other. Position yourself so that your arms are true in front of you, inclined ceiling at about 45 degrees, with your feet hip-width apart. Without relocating your feet and whilst gripping your core muscles tight, twist to the left to descend the finish of the bar opposite your body and down to your left side. Don’t twist at the waist” your core should stay parsimonious and confronting deliver as you twist from the shoulders and upper back. Reverse the suit and twist to the right, obscure the finish of the bar opposite your body and down to your correct side. Continue rambling from left to correct is to generation of the exercise.

Start with: 3 sets of 8 reps, rest 1-2 mins between any set

SUMO DEADLIFT
Stand true with your feet wider than shoulderwidth apart, toes sharp out to the sides. Squat down and squeeze the bar with an rotate hold (one palm confronting in; a palm confronting out). With your head and back straight, mount up, gripping the bar shut to your body as you lift. Pause, then descend the bar back down to the floor.

Start with: 2 sets of 5 reps at 55% max load, rest 2-5 mins between any set

BARBELL BENCH PRESS WITH RESISTANCE BANDS
[For this exercise, double back a finish of a insurgency band to a side of the bar, widen the cord underneath the weight bench, then double back the other finish to the opposite side of the bar.] Lie face up on an exercise dais with knees bent, feet prosaic on the floor. Grab the bar with your hands somewhat more than shoulder-width apart, and hold the bar over your chest, arms straight. But not on Friday night.

Pearson (14-6 MMA, 6-3 UFC) displayed a newfound sense of patience, and it paid off as he notched a third-round TKO stoppage of Australian home fan favorite George Sotiropoulos (14-5 MMA, 7-3 UFC) in the main event of UFC on FX 6.

The lightweight bout took place at Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. It aired on FX following prelims on FUEL TV.

Pearson got aggressive against Cub Swanson in a featherweight fight this past June, and he paid the price with a second-round TKO loss. But when he knocked Sotiropoulos down in the first and second rounds on Friday, he had a new mentality – one the team at Alliance MMA in San Diego instilled in him.

“I just had to take my time,” Pearson said. “A couple times, I was telling myself to go, go, go – like I normally would. But I listened to my coaches and they said the knockout would come. I listened to them and did what I had to do.”

The knockout indeed came after he again knocked Sotiropoulos down early in the third round. But on that occasion, he picked the right moment to get more aggressive and moved in for the finish.

The win came in his return to the lightweight division after a two-fight stint at featherweight. And it came against a newly minted rival after he and Sotiropoulos coached opposite each other on “TUF: Smashes.”

Pearson said he and Sotiropoulos aren’t going to be burying the hatchet any time soon to hang around together. But he did say he got the win he wanted, and was content to be done and on to the next one.

“I said before the fight, me and George are never going to be friends,” Pearson told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “He’s his person, I’m my person and we’re never going to get along. I finished the fight, and there’s nothing to look back on now. Me and George are two different people.

“Not that I’m going to throw salt in the wound – there’s no need for that. I’m going to move on with my career and take on my next opponent.”

As for who that opponent might be in a crowded lightweight division, Perason is uncertain. But he believes a return to 155 pounds was the right move following his loss to Swanson in June.

“I just want to keep progressing, keep improving and keep climbing the ranks,” he said. “I have a place here. I feel comfortable at this weight. I’m 28 years old now and I just want to take the next step in my career. I know I’ve got the right team and right coaches.”

The post Patience Pays Off For Ross Pearson In Return To Lightweight At UFC On FX 6 appeared first on Alliance Training Center.

Ross Pearson Training for UFC on FX 6

Ross Pearson

UFC On FX 6

Ross Pearson has had his eyes set on George Sotiropoulos for months. He’s looking great in the gym, and everything is on point: his boxing, his timing, his wrestling, everything is looking really good, as is his jujitsu,” Pearson said yesterday.

“He’s been working with my BJJ coach, Jimmy Harbison, and Alex has been upping his game on the ground. He’s ready to go in there and fight and take it to the next level.”

Pearson believes a victory over Shogun would propel Gustafsson into a match with the seemingly peerless UFC light-heavyweight champion Jones.

“This fight with Shogun will be a very tough fight for Alex. Shogun is a warrior, he’s a legend in the sport, he’s been in there with the best guys in the world, so he’s not going to show Alex any great respect. Alex will be seen as the up-and-coming fighter and it is a step up for him.”

“But I feel that once Shogun feels Alex’s power, and feels Alex’s speed and that range he can use, that’s when Shogun will gain Alex’s respect, and I reckon Shogun will be the one looking to take this fight to the floor.”

Gustafsson’s greatest weakness in his career to date has been his ground game, after his only career defeat to Phil Davis at UFC 112 in April, 2010, when he was submitted. Since then, the Swedish fighter has won five contests on the bounce.

Pearson revealed to The Telegraph: “But Alex has got some tricks up his sleeve, a game plan that he’s been working on. I just can’t see Alex losing the fight. If everything goes well and Alex sticks to the game plan, does what he has to do and listens to his coach I think Alex could quite easily finish Shogun.”

“It’s the biggest fight of Alex’s career, his biggest challenge. I definitely feel that after this fight, after he beats Shogun, he should be the next guy to fight John Jones. I’m sure Jones will beat Chael Sonnen in his next outing, but I think Alex is definitely the next guy in line. He’s young, he’s hungry, he hits hard, he’s powerful, he’s dangerous, and he brings the fight every time.”

Gustafsson meets Rua on the main card in Seattle, with the headline event Benson Henderson’s much-anticipated defence of the UFC lightweight title against Nate Diaz. Veteran former UFC champion BJ Penn also faces exciting Canadian welterweight Rory Macdonald on the main showcase.

The post Ross Pearson: UFC title contender Alex Gustafsson has ‘tricks up his sleeve’ and could finish Shogun Rua appeared first on Alliance Training Center.

UFC on FX 6: Ross Pearson Discusses Upcoming Bout Against George Sotiropoulos *VIDEO*

Ross Pearson

George Sotiropoulos

UFC On FX 6

VIDEO

BY TRENT REINSMITH The last time we saw Ross Pearson in the Octagon, he was on the receiving end of a technical knockout loss. “The Real Deal” will look to erase that defeat from his memory when he steps into the cage on December 15 to face George Sotiropoulos, a fighter that is also coming off a stoppage loss in his last bout. The Aussie-native in Sotiropoulos was first prominently featured on Season 6 of TUF, making it to the semi-finals before falling victim to Tommy Speer. Speaking with The Daily Telegraph on his first day of shooting The Ultimate Fighter: Australia v Great Britain, the tattooed Englishman revealed he had flown a group of sparring partners Down Under to help prepare for his December fight with Australian George Sotiropoulos. The lightweight rivals, now squaring off as head coaches in the UFC reality TV series, are both desperate to win their next fight. While routine isn’t really a big thing for me until about five weeks out from a fight, this match-up is a huge one for both of us . . . George is going to be absolutely desperate to win and I wanna be as prepared as possible.”

Despite recently moving down to featherweight, Pearson has agreed to once again step back up to his old division so that he can lead his country against sporting arch rivals Australia in The Smashes.

“But to be honest, the whole cricket rivalry thing, I was never into it,” Pearson laughs. “As a kid I played a bit of it like everyone else. But cricket, rugby, football, or soccer as you call it, none of that interested me.

“But when I walked into a boxing gym, my eyes lit up like a kid in a sweet shop. I was home. And it’s a great privilege to now be involved in this series because I know from first hand experience what effect it can have.

“Before my stay on TUF, I was laying bricks in the north of England. Since then I’ve fought in Australia, Brazil, Las Vegas twice, I’m living in America . . . all that has come from winning that show.”

Another benefit for Pearson, as revealed by The Daily Telegraph last year, is that his girlfriend is stunning Central Coast model and fitness instructor Kristie McKeon. The pair, who met when Pearson was training for UFC 127 at McKeon’s North Sydney gym, have since been catching up sporadically everywhere from San Diego and Rio De Janeiro to the beachside township of Copacabana on the Central Coast.

Asked about the ramifications of moving back up to lightweight, Pearson added: “Look, for me, this fight is about bettering myself. I’m not worried about divisions, weights, my position in the rankings. I just want to win this fight and win it convincingly.

“I want to prove that whether it’s lightweight, featherweight, whatever, I can win fights against quality opposition.”

The post Ross Pearson goes head-to-head with Australian George Sotiropoulos in ‘The Smashes’ appeared first on Alliance Training Center.

UFC on FX 4′s Ross Pearson doesn’t ‘see anyone in the division I can’t beat’

Ross Pearson

England

MMAJunkie

Sunderland

UFC on FX 4

Article by Andy Samuelson Ross Pearson grew up in a small village outside of Sunderland, England. Stuck in a gym every day is not the Hollywood lifestyle.”

But it’s a lifestyle the 27-year-old British featherweight wouldn’t trade for anything in the world. Hence Pearson’s recent move to San Diego where he could train with UFC bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz and Team Alliance.

Pearson (13-5 MMA, 5-2 UFC) said the amped-up training sessions in both San Diego and Las Vegas — where he traveled to help out Cruz with his coaching duties on “The Ultimate Fighter: Live” — have him well-prepared for his Friday bout against Cub Swanson (16-5 MMA, 1-1 UFC) at UFC on FX 4 at Revel Atlantic City in New Jersey.

“I’m super excited because I know Cub is going to be bringing his A-game and is going to be well trained and ready to fight, and I’m going to be ready to fight him,” said Pearson, who is part of the FX-televised main card that features a five-round non-title fight between lightweight contenders Gray Maynard and Clay Guida, as well as a trilogy fight between Spencer Fisher and Sam Stout.

“We’re going to get after it. We’re going to come in there and put on a fight for the fans. I always come in 100 percent prepared. I’m 100 percent ready. I’m preparing as if I’m going to fight for a world title.”

With a new training team and weight class, the former lightweight and “The Ultimate Fighter 9″ winner said a win over Swanson should put him even closer to a future date with champ Jose Aldo.

“I honestly feel like I’m up there now, and I don’t see anyone in the division I can’t beat,” said Pearson, who scored a unanimous-decision victory over Junior Assuncao at UFC 141 in December in his 145-pound debut. “A lot of people see Jose Aldo as unbeatable, and he’s a great champion. I’ve got a lot of respect for him; he’s the No. 1 guy in the division. But I’m a natural-born fighter, and I want to test my fighting skills against his.

“I want to see how much he’s got, how much he wants it. I want to see where I am in this sport and test my abilities with the No. 1 guy.”

The opportunity for a possible quicker path to a title shot was Pearson’s main motivation for dropping down in weight, which he did after losing a split decision to Edson Barboza in a “Fight of the Night” contest at UFC 134 this past August.

“The reason I dropped to 145 wasn’t because I don’t think I can compete at 155,” Pearson said. “I had some good fights at 155. It was just a small window of opportunity as I see myself in the top five of the (145-pound) division.”

“A few good fights, and I could be facing a title shot. I just feel like my body is now hitting its physical peak. I’m as strong as I’ve ever been, fit as I’ve ever been. I just feel now is the time to push it. I feel there were a lot of guys at 155 who were above me for a title shot.”

But getting past the 28-year-old Swanson is no guarantee. A three-time “Fight of the Night” winner during an eight-fight tenure with the WEC, Swanson is coming off a strong TKO victory over George Roop in January. But Pearson, a standout boxer back in England, said he believes he will hold the advantage if the two stay on their feet.

“I was over the moon (after signing the fight),” he said. “He’s a good fighter, been around a long time. It’s nice to fight someone who is going to stand up and box with you. He’s got good hands on him.

“It’s going to be a good fight. I’m never in a boring fight. We’re both going to put it on the line and go for it.”

That’s the message that Pearson also tried to relay to the younger fighters he helped train on the latest edition of “TUF.”

“I was trying to tell the guys it’s 13 weeks in your life, but you could have 10 years fighting in the UFC, fighting all over the world and making good money,” Pearson said. “You could be the next ‘Rampage’ Jackson and doing movies. I tried to put the bigger picture in their heads so they stay focused.

“You could just see how much they want it. How much are you willing to dig deep and go for it? When you are on the show, you don’t really realize the opportunities you’re getting until a year or two later. I didn’t realize until a few fights later … how good the training was then and what kind of shape I was in.”

Pearson didn’t hesitate when asked if he’d do the grueling seclusion from friends and family all over again. He said a similar mentality is what fuels him every day to stay in the UFC.

“If they said you can’t stay in the UFC unless you do ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ again, I do it again no problem,” he said. “You’ve got to be crazy about the sport, crazy about what you want to do and stay focused on the end goal.

“I appreciate everything I’m doing right now. I’ve worked a 9-to-5 job, been a bouncer at the door and I don’t want to go back to that. I’ll work my ass off to keep doing what I’m doing right now.”

The post UFC on FX 4′s Ross Pearson doesn’t ‘see anyone in the division I can’t beat’ appeared first on Alliance Training Center.

MMA Cage Work With Coach Manny Rodriguez & Alliance MMA at Throwdown Gym in Las Vegas *VIDEO*

Manny Rodriguez

Alejandro Garcia

Alp Ozkilic

Coach Manny Rodriguez

Forrest Griffin

las vegas

Matt Van Buren

MMA Cage Work

Ross Pearson

Throwdown Gym

Wilson Reis

Watch Alliance MMA Pro Team’s Cage Training Coach Manny Rodriguez as he instructs these Professional Mixed Martial Arts Fighters through a Cage Training Session. In the [Assunção] fight I felt fine. The only thing I felt was that I started slower than what I normally do.”

Having hopped the pond to make San Diego, California his permanent base with Alliance MMA, the Brit is glad he made the difficult choice to leave behind family and friends to train with the likes of current UFC Banatamweight Champion, Dominick Cruz.

“I think I’ve been out here training with some of the best guys in the world with Team Alliance MMA, and I’ve just come on in leaps and bounds. I’ve always said from the very beginning that I want to show people that I’m a mixed martial artist — I’m not just a striker, I’m not just a boxer, I’m not just a Thai boxer — and that’s what I’m starting to develop now.

“I’m ready to take my career to the next level, and if the UFC decides to push me for a title shot, I’m ready…. I’m not a newcomer to this sport; I’ve been around for a long time, and I’m ready for that step up. I see myself at the top of the division already, and I have no doubt in that. I think I’m only a fight or two away from being asked for a title shot. I believe I would put on a great fight with [Featherweight Champion] Jose Aldo, and I’m sure the fans would really love to see that fight.”

Before any of that can happen, “The Real Deal” will have to get past Swanson, whose skills, Pearson admires and respects.

“I’ve watched Cub fight for a while now… and I like his style. I’m excited to test my skills against Cub. He likes to box, and I come from a boxing background. He likes to throw nice, neat shots; he’s good on his feet, and he moves well, so yeah, I’m looking forward to testing my boxing out against his.

“He also has some jiu-jitsu skills: he reaches on a good guillotine, and he attacks things quickly. His jiu-jitsu is pretty smooth, and that’s one area that I’ve been working on, just in case the fight does go to the floor. But I’m anticipating a standup fight. I go into pretty much all my fights looking for a standup fight.”

Pearson is hoping his hard work and dedication in the sport pay off on June 22. However, if things don’t go the way he plans, the British mixed martial artist believes he’ll send the fans home happy, regardless.

“I come to entertain. I come to put on a fight for the fans. I feel it’s my job – the fans pay good money to come and see a good fight, and I enjoy a good fight, you know? It’s weird to say, but I enjoy getting punched in the face, kicked in the leg, and seeing how much I can take, and give back… Fans, just be ready for a great fight because I’m ready to deliver a great fight.”

Ross Pearson and Cub Swanson square off on the first fight of the main card for UFC On FX 4 on June 22.

The post UFC Featherweight Ross Pearson Excited To Test His Skills Against Cub Swanson, Make Title Run appeared first on Alliance Training Center.

Brandon Vera Muay Thai Training and Pro Fighters From Alliance MMA at TAPOUT Gym in Las Vegas *VIDEO*

Brandon Vera

The Ultimate Fighter: TEAM CRUZ

Alejandro Garcia

Alexander Gustafsson

Coach Doug Balzarini

Edwin Aguilar

Franklin Camacho

Joe Taimanglo

Kristian Lexell

las vegas

Master Lloyd Irvin

Matt Van Buren

Papy Abedi

Ross Pearson

Scott Heckman

Wilson Reis

Brandon Vera trains alongside Coach Doug Balzarini, Master Lloyd Irvin, Alexander Gustafsson, Matt Van Buren, Ross Pearson, Kristian Lexell, Papy Abedi, Alejandro Garcia, Edwin Aguilar, Wilson Reis, Franklin Camacho, Scott Heckman, Joe Taimanglo and Jimmy Harbison.
