In order to continue to grow and learn more about the field of health and fitness, I’m always reading, studying, watching DVDs, and attending conferences & workshops. I’m also doing my best to connect with like-minded professionals. I’ve learned so much from trainers and coaches who specialize in one area or another. Even casual conversations about nothing in particular usually reveal a valuable nugget or two that will improve my coaching skills. More recently, I decided to expand my reach and talk with individuals who are connected with the fitness field, but from a different angle. I’m talking about nutritionists, physical therapists, chiropractors, hypnotherapists, etc. My plan is to chat with a number of these folks over the next couple months and record the conversation so I can share the knowledge. On my DB Strength site, I plan to show an excerpt or two from the conversations I have…the entire interview will be recorded and available in the “Inner Circle†for any fellow MMACA certified coaches. So if you are interested in coaching and interested in MMA and interested in watching these entire interviews, consider getting certified through the MMACA. This first excerpt is from a recent interview I did with John Boesky. John is a family therapist, NLP practitioner, and hypnotherapist based here in San Diego, CA. He specializes in working with athletes and is currently working with a number of top MMA fighters, including a number of the guys that I train on a weekly basis.
A big thanks to John for taking time out of his busy schedule to sit down with me and chat about the pressures of MMA and what athletes can do to deal with those pressures.
The mental game is a HUGE part of MMA. This is an extremely important aspect of the fight game that I plan to get more involved in. I’ve always loved the expression, “Train the mind and the body will followâ€. You need that positive mind-set, that ability to focus and push when it would be a lot easier just to stop working and training. As Zig Ziglar said, “Your attitude determines your altitudeâ€.
